Founded in 1997, the National Park stretches over a zone of 1-15 km width along the northern shore of Lake Balaton on about 57,000 ha and preserves a truly Pannonian landscape.more info
A term among Europe's hobby ornithologists is the bird life of Kis-Balaton (Little Lake Balaton) - it is under the protection of the international Ramsar agreement. More than 250 species of birds can be seen here, such as, for example, Squacco -, Purple -, Grey -, Great White Egrets and Little Egrets, but also Great Cormorants, Pygmy Cormorants, Great Crested Grebes and Ferruginous Ducks.
The Tihany Peninsula was awarded with the European Diploma in 2003. However, the treasures of folk architecture and the picturesque castle ruins also contribute to the beauty of the landscape and thus to the mood of the visitor. A network of bike paths, information points and nature trails make it easy to absorb the many impressions and enjoy the stay.
National Park Fertő-Hanság
In front of the western gate of Hungary, the legends and fairy tales tell about a mysterious area. The enigmatic world of Lake Neusiedl and Hanság, which has been endowed with wild water and swamp, has changed over the centuries. The lake and the man-made landscape of the Hanság are a natural treasure that today is preserved by a common National Park of two countries.more info
In the areas that were once closed by the Iron Curtain, today visitors can enjoy a range of sights and have a rest in between, or even go on hikes.
The total area of the Fertő-Hanság National Park covers 23,731 ha. The Neusiedler See sub-area has been a protected landscape area since 1977, since 1979 part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Network. In 1989 it was declared an important wetland area for the Ramsar area. The national park title was awarded in 1991. Hanság, located east of the lake, has been a protected landscape area since 1976 and is part of the national park since 1994. The smallest mosaic of the National Park in terms of surface area, but by no means of lesser value, is the 'Rabnitz-Au' with its moorland meadows and alluvial forests.
National Park Kerkini See
The Kerkini Lake National Park was established in 2006 and covers an area of approximately 83,100 hectares. With over 312 bird species, it is one of the best observation areas in Europe all year round.more info
A heavenly area to watch birds!
Here both species, Dalmatian Pelican and Great White Pelican breed. In a mixed colony of altogether eleven different species one can find Pygmy Cormorants, Spoonbills, Glossy Ibis', Black-Crowned Night Herons, Little Egrets and Great White Egrets. Lesser White-Fronted Geese, Greater Flamingos and Greater Spotted Eagles winter regularly.
But also other groups of animals are to be found with impressive variety: in the National Park there are eleven amphibian, 27 reptilian, 58 mammal and 33 fish species to discover. More than 4.700 invertebrates, including 4.300 species of insects have been registered here of which 46 are completely new to science. However, plant diversity is no match for this wealth either: more than 1.300 plant species, including many rare aquatic plants, such as sea teapot, aquatic nut and clover fern, grow in this area.

voluntary nature conservation
The task as a nature conservation body is the support of the state, district and municipal authorities in matters of nature conservation. A very important task of the association is to inform and educate about legal and professional matters. The district groups of the VBNO are a contact point for questions and concerns in nature conservation. Every year, care assignments in protected areas are organized and carried out by the association. The exchange and the further education in the context of lectures and excursions for the nature protection organs and nature-interested ones is another important activity of the association.

Throughout the year, they accompany their visitors with a variety of exciting experiences and inspire through their colorful landscape forms.
